The Sh19 million debt dispute in Machakos County has taken a dramatic and emotional turn, blending allegations of violence, a sudden apology, and a controversial resolution that has left the public divided.
At the centre of the saga is comedian Sammy Kioko, who was reportedly assaulted on 31 March 2026 at the office of Wavinya Ndeti while demanding payment of the debt. According to reports, Kioko was allegedly beaten by county askaris, leaving him with serious injuries. Updates shared by fellow comedian 2mbili indicated that Kioko sustained a severe fracture to his left thigh near the knee. He remains immobilised in a plaster cast and is currently unable to walk.

In a surprising development, Kioko’s sister, Maureen Mwende Mutua, met with Governor Ndeti at her private residence just hours after the incident. Accompanied by her parents, Mwende—who identifies as the Director of Movata Designs—issued a public apology over how the dispute had unfolded.
“We just wanted to say we’re sorry… maybe that was the only way for us to express our frustrations, but now we know better,” she said in a video shared online.
She emphasised that the family’s main objective was to secure the Sh19 million owed, while also urging Kenyans not to politicise the matter. Governor Ndeti later confirmed that the issue had been “amicably resolved” and assured that payment would be processed through the proper channels.
However, the meeting and apology have triggered widespread backlash and confusion online. Many Kenyans questioned the abrupt shift in tone from Kioko’s family, especially given the seriousness of the alleged assault.
Among those reacting were popular comedians and media personalities. MC Tricky hinted at an imminent financial resolution, posting, “Naskia ile pesa iko karibu kuingia, please ni-update.” Meanwhile, Oga Obinna voiced confusion over the fast-paced developments, asking, “Guys sielewi… KIOKO AMELIPWA?? KIOKO AMEPONA??”
