United Democratic Alliance yesterday suffered a blow after the party’s youth leaders in Kisii defected to ODM.

The officials, who were received by Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka and his Dagoretti North counterpart Simba Arati, vowed to support the Orange party candidates in next year’s election.

The defectors were led by Rogers Onyancha who has been the county UDA youth coordinator.

Arati, who wants to be the governor of Kisii, urged the defectors to register online as ODM members.

“I know they will look for you to change your mind.

Go, eat but do not succumb to their whims,” Arati told a delegates meeting drawn from the county’s nine sub-counties.

He pledged that if elected governor, he will complete the sugarcane factory in South Mugirango constituency and banana, soapstone and avocado factories started by Governor James Ongwae to help create jobs and boost the county’s economy.

“Onyonka and I will also negotiate with investors who relocated a Coca-Cola company to Nyeri so that they can start a plant here to help our people,” Arati said.

Onyonka, who is Ford Kenya Deputy party leader, said he will vie for the senate seat on an ODM ticket. He appealed to the electorate to elect Arati governor, him Senator and Raila Odinga president.

The Kitutu Chache MP advised Senator Sam Ongeri and former Senator Chris Obure, who are also eyeing the governor’s seat, to step down in favour of Arati.
