For months, critics argued that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s influence in Mt Kenya politics was overstated and untested at the ballot box. The Ol Kalou by-election may have changed that conversation entirely.
With DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Ngotho defeating UDA’s Samuel Muchina Nyagah in a contest widely viewed as a direct political duel between President William Ruto and Gachagua, the former Deputy President now has something every politician values most — proof of electoral strength.
The victory gives Gachagua more than just an MP. It gives him momentum.
In politics, perception matters almost as much as numbers. Leaders, aspirants and grassroots mobilisers naturally gravitate towards politicians they believe are ascending and capable of delivering victories. Following the Ol Kalou result, many politicians across Mt Kenya are likely to reassess their alliances.
The biggest immediate beneficiary could be Nyandarua Senator John Methu, who led much of the campaign machinery on the ground. The victory positions him as one of the region’s emerging kingmakers and strengthens the wider Gachagua network in Nyandarua.
The result also sends a message to sitting MPs, governors and senators in the region: Gachagua’s political movement is capable of winning elections against the ruling party in the heart of Mt Kenya.
For leaders sitting on the political fence, the pressure to choose sides may now intensify.
Beyond Nyandarua, the victory is likely to energise Gachagua’s allies in counties such as Murang’a, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri and Meru, where questions about the region’s political direction ahead of 2027 are already dominating political discussions.
Perhaps most importantly, the Ol Kalou victory gives Gachagua a powerful campaign message: that despite his fallout with the Kenya Kwanza administration, he still commands significant support in the mountain.
Whether that support translates into wider regional dominance remains to be seen, but after Ol Kalou, dismissing Gachagua as a spent political force will become far more difficult.
The by-election may have elected one MP, but politically, it may have marked the beginning of a new phase in Mt Kenya politics — one in which Rigathi Gachagua becomes the central figure around whom the region’s political calculations revolve.
