Dr Thuo Mathenge Honoured for Agricultural Research and Aflatoxin Control Innovation

Dr Thuo Mathenge, Chairman of the Board of Management at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO), has received dual recognition for his outstanding contribution to agricultural research and innovation in Kenya.

The recognition, issued by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), CGIAR, and KALRO, highlights his leadership in advancing science-based solutions aimed at improving food safety and strengthening agricultural productivity.

Dr Mathenge was named a Research Ambassador of aflasafe KE01, a biological intervention designed for the pre-harvest control of aflatoxins in maize, groundnuts, and sorghum—key staple crops in Kenya.

The innovation is widely regarded as a critical tool in reducing aflatoxin contamination, a persistent public health challenge that affects food safety and export competitiveness in the region.

Reacting to the recognition, Dr Mathenge expressed appreciation to the awarding institutions, saying the honour reflects a shared commitment to improving food systems through research.

“I am deeply honoured by this recognition from IITA, CGIAR, and KALRO. This award is not mine alone but a reflection of the collective effort of researchers, partners, and farmers who continue to push the boundaries of agricultural innovation. We remain committed to ensuring that science delivers practical solutions that safeguard food security and improve livelihoods,” he said.

The recognition comes as Kenya intensifies efforts to combat aflatoxin contamination and promote safer food systems through research-driven interventions and public-private partnerships.
