Dockworkers Union (DWU) General Secretary Simon Sang has threatened that his members will go on strike by end of this month.
He said he has already issued a strike notice to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) managing director captain William Ruto over government delay in implementing a two year Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) concluded several months ago.
“A total of 4,500 members affiliated to DWU will take part in the intended mother of all strikes,” he pointed out.
Sang said unless otherwise the planed strike will take place in the entire country.
He spoke during a media briefing held at Lotus Hotel in the port city.
The DWU General Secretary said in his statement that he has already notified all necessary authorities of their intended strike.
Sang said they will down their tools after the holy month Ramadhan at the end of the month.
He added that they have issued a strike notice to KPA over government failure to implement the CBA agreement concluded months ago.
“The government should stop taking us for granted for being peaceful,” he warned.
The DWU General Secretary confirmed a total of 4,500 workers will down their tools by end of this month.
Sang said in his statement shared with the media that unless the government fulfills their CBA the much anticipated mother of all strikes will take place.
He said the planned strike will be worse than that of 2016 adding that they have been patient but have now resolved to ask their members to down their tools after all avenues for dialogue were exhausted.
“We won’t hesitate to go back to the 2016 incident as that seems to be the only language the government understands,” he pointed out.
The DWU spokesperson said the government has been left with an option to meet their demand before end of this month.
Sang insisted that after Muslims end marking the fasting in the month of Ramadhan it won’t be business as usual at all port facilities within the entire country.
