The government is set to enact the new Cooperatives Bill by the end of this month in a move aimed at transforming Kenya’s cooperative sector through stronger governance, enhanced transparency, and digital reforms.
Speaking during a cooperative sector engagement, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said the Bill is expected to be signed into law by President William Ruto within a month after completing the parliamentary process.
“Within a month, the Bill will be signed into law by the President so that we can modernize this sector, improve transparency and governance, and make it digitally enabled,” said Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
The proposed legislation seeks to modernize the management of cooperatives and SACCOs by strengthening accountability, safeguarding members’ savings, improving oversight, and embracing digital systems. It will also repeal the current Cooperative Societies Act and introduce a new legal framework designed to restore public confidence in the sector.
Kindiki said the reforms are intended to position cooperatives as key drivers of economic growth under the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
