Homa Bay Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga has resigned from office with immediate effect.
In a statement released on Thursday, February 27, 2026, Governor Gladys Wanga confirmed that she had formally accepted a resignation letter dated February 26, 2026, from the Deputy Governor.
Governor Wanga said the resignation takes effect from February 26 and cited Article 181(1) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, and Section 32C(b) of the County Governments Act, 2012, as the legal basis for declaring the office vacant.
The Governor noted that Magwanga had previously been a gubernatorial aspirant before the 2022 General Elections and later accepted the running mate position in the interest of party unity under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

During his tenure, Magwanga was entrusted with additional responsibilities, including serving as County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and Livestock Development. Governor Wanga said he had fulfilled his constitutional mandate while in office.
However, the statement indicated that the resignation letter referenced “persistent and irreconcilable differences,” which the Governor said had increasingly affected collective focus within the county leadership.
Governor Wanga also referenced Magwanga’s recent public opposition to the ODM candidate in the Kasipul by-election, saying the move raised concerns about unity within the county administration and the party.
Despite the development, Governor Wanga assured residents that county operations will continue uninterrupted and that service delivery remains a priority.
She maintained that the county government remains committed to accountability, expansion of development projects across wards, and institutional stability.
The process of addressing the vacancy in the Office of the Deputy Governor will proceed in accordance with the law.
