Kenya Adopts Global Best Practices to Counter Emerging Security Threats

The Kenyan government is stepping up efforts to modernize its security operations by adopting international best practices aimed at addressing emerging security threats in urban areas.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said Kenya is drawing lessons from the New York Police Department (NYPD) as part of preparations to strengthen security management, particularly in the Nairobi metropolitan region.

Speaking during a learning tour of the NYPD, Murkomen said the Kenyan delegation received presentations on how the department investigates crimes, monitors crime trends, and deters criminal activities across New York City’s five boroughs.

The Interior CS noted that modern policing increasingly relies on technology and data to prevent and respond to crime. Among the approaches showcased during the visit were the use of camera surveillance systems, social media research, facial recognition technology, and vehicle identification systems.

“In our continuing learning tour of the New York Police Department, we were taken through presentations on how the department investigates, tracks crime trends, and deters crime in the five boroughs of New York City,” Murkomen said.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, the lessons acquired from the tour will help Kenya improve its capacity to address evolving security challenges, including organized crime, urban insecurity, and other emerging threats.

“We are taking these lessons and best practices back home as we gear up for the establishment of the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit,” he said.

Murkomen said the government’s objective is to establish a modern, professional, and technology-driven police unit capable of effectively responding to changing security dynamics while enhancing public safety in Nairobi and its surrounding areas.

“Our goal is to build a modern, professional, and technology-driven police unit capable of effectively responding to emerging security threats and safeguarding our City and its environs,” he added.
