Naiboi’s Wangaya Named SportPesa Premier League Player for April

A sharp start has become Kevin Wangaya’s trademark  and in April, it turned the young striker into one of the most decisive players in the SportPesa Premier League.

The Nairobi United forward was on Friday named the league’s Player of the Month after a series of match-opening performances that helped his side remain unbeaten during the period.

At just 20 years old, Wangaya becomes the second youngest player to claim the accolade, following Humphrey Aroko, the teenage Kariobangi Sharks star who won the award in February.

“I’m really honoured to win this award,” said Wangaya. “Seeing Aroko win it earlier in the season was a big motivation — it showed what’s possible. I’ve just stayed focused, worked hard, and I’m happy to see it paying off.”

The Kenya U20 international enjoyed a standout month, scoring three goals and providing three assists in five matches as Nairobi United strengthened their push in the league.

More importantly, Wangaya repeatedly struck first, opening the scoring against Mathare United, Posta Rangers and Mara Sugar to hand his team early control of matches.

His biggest contribution came against Murang’a Seal, where his two assists inspired Nairobi United’s remarkable comeback from 2-0 down to secure a dramatic 4-2 victory.

“I just try to be ready from the first whistle,” Wangaya added. “If we start strong, the whole team grows into the game. But more importantly, we’re fighting for results, and every contribution counts.”

The award race also featured strong performances from Daniel Ogembo of Police FC, who kept four clean sheets during the month, and Wangaya’s Nairobi United teammate Michael Karamor, who scored five goals.

Nairobi United head coach Godfrey ‘Solo’ Oduor said Wangaya’s mentality and hunger were driving his rapid rise.

“We challenge our players to push their limits and aim for the highest level, and Wangaya is embracing that,” said Oduor. “He’s been decisive for us, he’s growing in confidence, and this is just the beginning if he stays consistent and hungry.”

The forward received a cash prize of Kes 50,000 alongside a customised trophy for the achievement.

Attention now shifts to Nairobi United’s upcoming clash against Kariobangi Sharks, where Wangaya is set for a highly anticipated showdown with fellow young sensation Aroko in a battle of two of Kenyan football’s brightest rising stars.
