Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has questioned the sustainability of Kenya’s expanding diplomatic presence abroad amid reports of delayed salaries and operational challenges affecting embassy staff.
The senator raised concerns over claims that Kenyan employees in foreign missions are going for months without pay, while some diplomatic offices reportedly face rent arrears and inadequate support.
According to Olekina, the situation reflects deeper financial and administrative challenges within the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, warning that the crisis could weaken Kenya’s image internationally.
“The situation of Kenyan staff in diplomatic missions abroad is unacceptable. Many are going months without pay, rent is delayed, and they lack even the basic support needed to represent the country. If this is the state of our missions abroad, what is happening within the Ministry itself? It points to a system weighed down by pending bills and inefficiencies,’he said in a statement.
He challenged the government to reconsider plans to open additional diplomatic missions and instead prioritize stabilizing existing embassies and improving working conditions for staff already serving abroad.
Olekina also urged Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi to take urgent action, saying the continued struggles facing diplomats and Kenyan citizens abroad are untenable.
The remarks add to ongoing debate over government spending priorities and accountability within key state institutions.
