The mystery surrounding the death of a hotel intern in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area has deepened after a postmortem examination confirmed that she died from injuries sustained in a fatal fall.

The deceased, Margaret Wambui, was found to have suffered severe injuries consistent with a fall from a significant height. While the examination established the medical cause of death as multiple traumatic injuries, it did not determine how or why she fell, leaving investigators to continue searching for answers.

Wambui, who was undertaking her internship at a hotel in Nairobi, was found dead outside a building in Upper Hill earlier this week. Her death shocked colleagues, friends, and family, who described her as a hardworking and ambitious young woman looking forward to building a career in the hospitality industry.

According to police, emergency responders arrived at the scene after receiving reports that a woman had fallen from an upper floor of the building. She was pronounced dead at the scene, prompting investigators to launch inquiries to establish whether the incident was accidental, self-inflicted, or involved foul play.

The postmortem examination, conducted at the Nairobi Funeral Home in the presence of family members and detectives, revealed that Wambui sustained extensive injuries across multiple parts of her body. The pathologist concluded that the injuries were consistent with a high-impact fall and determined the cause of death to be multiple trauma.

However, the examination did not explain the circumstances surrounding the fall, leaving investigators with the task of reconstructing Wambui’s final moments.

Detectives have since begun reviewing CCTV footage from the building and interviewing hotel staff, security guards, and anyone who may have interacted with Wambui before the incident. Investigators are also examining her phone records and messages to establish her movements and state of mind in the hours leading up to her death.

Wambui’s family has accepted the postmortem findings regarding the medical cause of death but continues to demand a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

“We want to know what really happened to our daughter. The postmortem has explained how she died, but we still need answers about why it happened. She had dreams and plans for her future,” a family member said.

Friends described Wambui as dedicated, hardworking, and passionate about her career. They said she had been looking forward to completing her internship and securing permanent employment in the hospitality sector.

Her death has also sparked renewed discussions about mental health awareness, workplace safety, and the welfare of interns and young professionals. Stakeholders in the hospitality industry have expressed concern that interns often work under demanding conditions and have urged employers to strengthen workplace safety measures and provide better support systems.

Police have appealed to members of the public with any information that could assist the investigation to come forward. Detectives say all possible angles remain under investigation as they await the outcome of forensic examinations and witness interviews.

Authorities have also cautioned the public against spreading speculation on social media, warning that unverified claims could interfere with investigations and cause additional distress to the bereaved family.

Should investigators establish that a criminal offence was committed, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) will compile evidence, including forensic findings, witness statements, CCTV footage, and digital records, before forwarding the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for legal review and possible prosecution.

As the family prepares to lay Wambui to rest, they continue to hope investigators will uncover the truth behind her death and deliver justice.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the importance of conducting thorough investigations into unexplained deaths, particularly those occurring in workplaces and commercial buildings. Legal experts note that while a postmortem establishes the medical cause of death, investigators must still determine the events that led to it.
