Sammy Kamau Ngotho of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has won the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, succeeding the late David Njuguna Kiaraho, who died in March 2026.
The Ol Kalou by-election was widely viewed as a major political test between President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp in the Mt Kenya region.
UDA backed Samuel Muchina Nyagah, while DCP threw its support behind Ngotho, turning the contest into a battle for political influence in Nyandarua County and the wider Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Following the outcome, State House digital strategist Dennis Itumbi appeared to concede defeat for UDA, congratulating the winner and acknowledging the result.
“Congratulations Ngotho. Well fought. Well won. Serve Ol Kalou well,” Itumbi said in a statement shared after the results emerged.
He also praised UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah for his campaign efforts, saying: “Good campaign Muchina Samuel Nyagah — we had a great race. We did what we could. We lost today. There is tomorrow.”
Itumbi further urged supporters to look ahead to future political contests, adding, “Tuonane in the next democratic process.”
Other candidates who contested for the seat included Edwin Muchiri of the Party of National Unity (PNU), Stephen Wanyoike of the National Liberal Party (NLP), independent candidate Rachael Njoroge, Edward Mwaniki of the Kenya Moja Movement (KMM), Abdifatah Hussein of the Federal Party of Kenya (FPK), Timothy Kamau of the People’s Renaissance Movement (PRM), and Moses Njoroge Macharia of the Jubilee Party.
The by-election was occasioned by the death of former MP David Njuguna Kiaraho in March this year.
