Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed solidarity with families affected by the tragic flooding in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County, following the breach of the Old Kijabe Dam.
The flooding has led to a massive humanitarian crisis, with loss of life and widespread displacement.
Speaking deputy president Rigathi Gachagua extended heartfelt sympathies to the affected families nationwide.
“On behalf of President William Samoei Ruto and the entire Government, I send our deepest sympathies to the families who have lost loved ones in this unfortunate incident in Mai Mahiu and the rest of the country and those who have been displaced,”Gachagua said.
He praised the efforts of the County Government of Nakuru, Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara, MCAs, the National Youth Service, and other stakeholders for their swift response to the crisis.
“I visited the strip that was hit hard by the raging waters at Mai Mahiu; the damage is deep and devastating. It has also triggered a massive humanitarian crisis akin to what has been witnessed in other parts of our Nation as the enhanced rains leave trails of death, destruction and displacements. Nature’s fury is immeasurable, “he said.
In response to the crisis, the government has deployed resources to assist affected individuals and communities nationwide. Additionally, measures are being implemented to prevent further loss of lives and livelihoods.
Gachagua was accompanied by several leaders during his visit, including Roads and Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara, Kiambu Woman Representative Ann Wamuratha, and other officials, underscoring the collaborative effort to address the crisis.
