NAIROBI, Kenya – Hundreds of fans turned up in Nairobi for the latest edition of the Vurugu Boxing event, underscoring the growing popularity of the sports entertainment platform founded by media personality and comedian Oga Obinna.
The event, held over the weekend, featured a series of high-energy boxing bouts involving social media influencers, content creators and amateur fighters. The venue was packed with spectators, while thousands more followed the action through live streams and social media platforms.
Unlike traditional boxing tournaments, Vurugu Boxing combines competitive sport with entertainment, creating an atmosphere that appeals to both boxing enthusiasts and young audiences.
The event featured dramatic ring entrances, lively commentary and competitive matchups that kept fans engaged throughout the evening.
Speaking during the event, Oga Obinna said the initiative is designed to grow the sport while creating opportunities for emerging talent.
“We want to build a platform that not only entertains people but also gives upcoming athletes and content creators an opportunity to showcase their abilities,” he said.
The event attracted supporters from across Nairobi, many of whom praised the unique concept of blending boxing with digital entertainment.
“This is more than just boxing. It’s entertainment, competition and a chance for young people to showcase their talent. The atmosphere was incredible,” said Kevin Otieno, one of the spectators.
Beyond entertainment, organizers say the platform aims to nurture grassroots boxing talent by exposing amateur fighters to larger audiences and encouraging more young people to participate in the sport.
Following the success of the latest edition, organizers have announced plans to hold more Vurugu Boxing events across the country, with expectations of attracting bigger crowds, more sponsors and a wider pool of participants.
