A family in Kisii County is appealing to well-wishers for financial assistance after their daughter, Ruth Moraa, a Form Three student at Kegati Secondary School, died following a short illness, leaving behind a hospital bill of KSh 926,000.
According to her mother, Ruth had returned to school on a Tuesday after the holidays. A few days later, she received a call from the school informing her that her daughter’s condition had deteriorated and asking her to pick her up immediately.
“When I arrived at the school, she was in severe pain. We rushed her to hospital, where doctors admitted her. The following day, she underwent surgery to remove pus that had accumulated in her abdomen before she was taken back to the ICU,” the grieving mother said.
Despite undergoing surgery and receiving specialised treatment, Ruth’s condition failed to improve. She remained in the Intensive Care Unit for nine days before she succumbed.
Her mother said the family believes Ruth may have been silently enduring the illness before her condition became critical. She added that they did not conduct a post-mortem examination after doctors explained that her intestines had been extensively damaged.
The family is now struggling to raise enough money to settle the KSh 926,000 hospital bill so they can collect Ruth’s body and give her a dignified burial.
“We have organised several fundraisers, but we have not managed to raise enough money. We are appealing to well-wishers to help us clear the bill so that we can give our daughter a proper send-off,” her mother pleaded.
