The Kenyan media fraternity is in mourning following the passing of veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela at the age of 85. His family confirmed his death earlier today, marking the end of an era for one of Kenya’s most iconic voices.
Mbotela, best known for his legendary radio show “Je, Huu Ni Uungwana?”, was a household name in Kenya for decades.
His powerful, articulate voice and signature storytelling style made him a beloved figure in the country’s broadcasting industry.
Born in 1940, Mbotela began his career in the 1960s, quickly rising to prominence as a radio presenter, sports commentator, and journalist.
He became synonymous with Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), where he worked for many years, influencing generations of media professionals.

Throughout his career, Mbotela covered significant moments in Kenya’s history, including the 1982 coup attempt, during which he was forced to announce the takeover of the government by rebel soldiers.
Despite such challenges, his resilience and dedication to journalism remained unwavering.
News of his passing has been met with an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, politicians, and fans who admired his contributions to Kenya’s media landscape.

“Mbotela was more than just a broadcaster; he was a mentor and a pioneer who shaped the industry,” said a statement from KBC. “His voice will forever remain etched in the hearts of Kenyans.”
The family has requested privacy during this difficult time and will announce burial arrangements in due course.
