Ndindi Nyoro Launches New Party as Kenya’s 2027 Politics Heats Up

By Julius Gitau

KIHARU, Kenya — Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has launched the People’s Party of Kenya, marking a major shift in his political career and adding another player to Kenya’s increasingly competitive 2027 political landscape.

Nyoro, who had been associated with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), has broken ranks with the ruling party as he begins to chart an independent political path.

The launch comes at a politically significant moment, with politicians and political formations already positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Nyoro’s move has generated considerable political interest because of his influence among young politicians and his previous association with the Kenya Kwanza administration. His decision to establish a new party could potentially reshape political alliances, particularly in the vote-rich Central Kenya region.

According to reports, Nyoro has also indicated his willingness to work with opposition leaders, signalling that the new party could seek alliances beyond the current government coalition.

The launch is being closely watched by political observers because Kenyan political parties have traditionally relied heavily on coalitions and regional alliances to build national support.

Nyoro is now expected to embark on political tours to popularise the new party and explain its agenda to voters. His first political tour following his exit from UDA is expected to take place in his political backyard and surrounding areas.

However, the new political formation is already facing criticism from political opponents. Some leaders allied to President Ruto have dismissed the formation of individual parties and maintained their support for the President’s 2027 bid.

The development also comes against the backdrop of growing political activity across Kenya. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is also scheduled to hold rallies in Murang’a, adding another layer to the political competition in the region.

For Nyoro, the immediate challenge will be turning the new party from a political announcement into an organisation capable of attracting candidates, members and voters across the country.

The bigger question is whether the People’s Party of Kenya can develop into a national political force or remain largely associated with its founder.
