Mary Wambui, the mother of businessman and politician Jimi Wanjigi, has defended her son against any criminal accusations, describing his recent difficulties as deeply unfortunate.
In a video shared with the Star, a visibly distressed Wambui expressed her sorrow over the raid at her son’s home, which came just a month after the passing of Jimi’s father.
She insisted that Wanjigi has never been involved in criminal activities, noting his consistent character as a loving son, father, and husband. “I have known him since childhood, and he has never been a criminal. He is a loving person, and I hope that people will see his innocence in this situation,” she said.
On Thursday, a multi-agency security team raided Wanjigi’s Muthaiga residence in an attempt to apprehend him. The team had been stationed outside his Nairobi home for hours before forcibly entering the property.
During the raid, they searched the house for Wanjigi and additional evidence. The police claimed they found tear gas canisters in a vehicle allegedly linked to Wanjigi, parked at the entrance to his Muthaiga home.
Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli announced that the vehicle contained four tear gas canisters, two Motorola gadgets, seven assorted phone chargers, and one mobile phone. He urged Wanjigi to surrender for questioning.
In response, Wanjigi denied ownership of the vehicle and the tear gas canisters, asserting that he believes the charges against him are politically motivated. “I don’t think the IG has legitimate grounds to arrest me or to press criminal charges against me,” he stated.
Wanjigi has filed a case at the Milimani Law Courts, alleging that he is being framed as part of a political scheme.
