Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover Opens, Promising Major Relief for Nairobi Traffic

Motorists using the busy Ngong Road corridor are set to enjoy shorter travel times following the official opening of the 820-metre Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover, a KSh3.8 billion infrastructure project aimed at easing congestion in the capital.

The new flyover is expected to eliminate one of Nairobi’s most notorious traffic bottlenecks, improving the movement of people and goods while enhancing road safety along one of the city’s busiest transport routes.

According to the government, the project is expected to reduce traffic congestion by up to 60 per cent, significantly cutting travel time and lowering transport costs for commuters and businesses that rely on the corridor daily.

The opening forms part of a wider infrastructure programme designed to modernize Nairobi’s transport network and improve mobility across the city.

Among the ongoing projects is the KSh3 billion Upper Hill–Kenyatta Avenue Viaduct, which is currently 60 per cent complete. The government is also constructing KSh3.9 billion access roads to Talanta Sports City and upgrading State House Road through a KSh1.6 billion investment.

In addition, plans are underway to dual the 23.5-kilometre Kiambu Road corridor under a $231 million (approximately KSh30 billion) project aimed at further improving traffic flow into and out of the city.

To complement the road expansion, the government is rolling out an Intelligent Transport System that will cover more than 210 signalised junctions across Nairobi. The three-phase project, estimated to cost KSh45 billion, will use real-time traffic management technology to coordinate traffic signals, improve road safety and reduce congestion.

The capital is also undergoing an extensive urban road improvement programme, with 729 kilometres of roads currently under routine maintenance, while several others are being rehabilitated to improve accessibility across different parts of the city.

Officials say the combined investments are intended to tackle long-standing traffic challenges that have slowed Nairobi’s economic growth and position the city as a modern, efficient and globally competitive gateway to Eastern Africa.
