President Ruto Accuses Moi’s Standard Media of Political Sabotage

President William Ruto has intensified his confrontation with sections of the mainstream media, accusing Standard Media Group of running a sustained campaign aimed at undermining his administration.

In a strongly-worded statement, the President claimed that negative headlines targeting him and his government were part of an attempt to pressure and blackmail the administration.

“Your Standard Media’s five days a week extortionist propaganda headlines on me and my administration’s transformative track record will get you nothing and nowhere,” Ruto said.

The President insisted that his government would not bow to what he described as media-driven pressure, adding that Kenya belongs to all citizens and not a single media organization.

“Blackmail to yield to your greed? Never. Kenya belongs to all Kenyans, not you alone. Jaribu eight days a week. Do your worst,” he stated.

The remarks mark the latest chapter in an increasingly tense relationship between the Kenya Kwanza administration and some of the country’s leading media houses. Since taking office, Ruto has repeatedly accused sections of the media of bias and unfair reporting, while journalists and media organizations have defended their coverage as part of their watchdog role.

Political observers say the President’s latest remarks reflect growing sensitivity within government circles over public narratives surrounding the economy, governance, and preparations for the 2027 General Election.

The public rebuke is also likely to fuel fresh debate over press freedom, media independence, and the role of journalism in holding those in power accountable.

As political temperatures begin to rise ahead of 2027, the relationship between State House and mainstream media appears set to remain a key battleground in shaping public opinion.
