Safaricom, Huawei Launch Kenya’s First In-Home Fibre Network Technology

Safaricom, in partnership with Huawei, has launched Kenya’s first Fibre to the Room (FTTR) solution, marking a major step in home internet connectivity and digital living innovation.

The new technology is designed to meet the growing demand for faster and more reliable internet in homes where multiple devices and high-bandwidth applications operate simultaneously. Unlike traditional Fibre to the Home setups that rely on a single Wi-Fi router, FTTR extends fibre connectivity into every room, ensuring seamless ultra-fast internet coverage across the entire house.

Under the solution, each room is fitted with an optical access point to deliver consistent speeds, minimal latency, and eliminate dead zones or signal interruptions.

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said modern homes require more than basic connectivity, noting that the partnership with Huawei aims to provide a fully connected digital ecosystem that supports evolving household needs.

The FTTR solution is expected to support activities such as 4K and 8K streaming, online gaming, remote work, video conferencing, smart home systems, cloud storage, and immersive augmented and virtual reality experiences.

Key features include whole-home gigabit coverage, ultra-low latency for real-time applications, AI-powered network optimization, smart home integration, and improved reliability and performance.

Safaricom said the launch positions the company as the first provider in Kenya to offer a complete in-home fibre connectivity solution, strengthening its role in next-generation broadband and smart home technology.

The partnership combines Safaricom’s fibre infrastructure and customer reach with Huawei’s FTTR technologies, including optical terminals, Wi-Fi 6/6+ capabilities, and AI-driven network management, laying the foundation for future innovations in home automation, security, entertainment, and energy management.
