Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have arrested former High Court of Kenya judge Joseph Mutava over allegations that he solicited a Sh10.4 million bribe to influence the outcome of a commercial dispute involving a former Cabinet minister.
Mutava was arrested alongside advocate Kimani Wachira and two other suspects. They are currently being held at the Integrity Centre police station as investigations continue.
The former judge previously faced disciplinary action during his time in the Judiciary. In 2019, the Supreme Court of Kenya upheld a tribunal’s 2016 recommendation for his removal from office over gross misconduct.

Mutava had filed an application on September 29, 2016 seeking to overturn the tribunal’s findings, but the apex court dismissed the appeal, affirming the decision that led to his removal. The tribunal had earlier submitted its report to former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The EACC says it has recently intensified investigations into corruption within the justice sector, warning that attempts to influence court decisions through bribery undermine the rule of law and erode public confidence in the judiciary.
Authorities say more details will be released after the suspects are formally processed and preliminary investigations are completed.
