Questions Emerge Over Junet Mohamed’s KSh 10 Million Women Empowerment Pledge

Residents of Suna East in Migori County are seeking answers over the whereabouts of a KSh 10 million contribution announced by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed during a Women Empowerment Harambee.

During the fundraising event, Junet Mohamed pledged KSh 10 million, saying the money would support women’s empowerment initiatives in the constituency. Other leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) who attended the event also made financial pledges, bringing the total amount announced to at least KSh 35 million.

However, days after the fundraiser, some residents say they have not seen any evidence of how the money was distributed or which women’s groups benefited from the contributions.

“We just want to know: Where did the KSh 10 million go? Who received it? Which women’s groups benefited? What projects can be seen on the ground?” some residents have asked.

The concerns have continued to circulate on social media, with members of the public calling on the leaders and event organizers to provide a detailed account of how the pledged funds were allocated and whether they have reached the intended beneficiaries.

Residents argue that transparency is essential whenever large sums of money are raised during public fundraising events. They say providing a clear breakdown of the beneficiaries and projects funded would help build public confidence and encourage support for similar initiatives in the future.

At the time of publication, Junet Mohamed and the organizers of the Suna East Women Empowerment Harambee had not publicly responded to the concerns or provided details on the disbursement of the pledged funds.

Community fundraising events have traditionally played an important role in supporting development projects and empowering vulnerable groups across Kenya. However, governance experts have consistently emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency to ensure public donations are used for their intended purpose.

Residents are now awaiting an official explanation detailing who received the funds, how much was disbursed to each women’s group, and the projects undertaken using the money pledged during the harambee

A response from Junet Mohamed, the event organizers, or the beneficiary women’s groups is expected to help clarify the concerns raised by residents and provide accountability regarding the management of the pledged funds.
