Teachers in Kenya are earning higher salaries in 2026 following the implementation of the latest Teachers Service Commission (TSC) salary structure under the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The revised pay structure, negotiated between the TSC and teachers’ unions, introduced salary increases across all job groups, benefiting thousands of primary and secondary school teachers nationwide. The agreement is part of a wider effort to improve teachers’ welfare and address concerns over the rising cost of living.
Entry-Level Teachers
Teachers joining the profession at Grade B5, commonly known as Primary Teacher II, earn a basic monthly salary ranging between KSh 28,620 and KSh 37,100. Meanwhile, teachers in Grade C1, which includes Primary Teacher I and Secondary Teacher III, earn between KSh 35,336 and KSh 47,261 per month.
Mid-Level Teachers
Teachers who have advanced through promotions and gained experience earn significantly higher salaries. Senior Teacher II and Secondary Teacher II officers in Grade C2 receive between KSh 41,420 and KSh 57,230, while Grade C3 teachers earn between KSh 49,781 and KSh 66,233 monthly.
School Administrators and Principals
Teachers serving in leadership positions receive the highest salaries within the profession. Headteachers and Deputy Headteachers in Grade C5 earn between KSh 69,745 and KSh 96,132 per month. Principals in Grade D3 take home between KSh 109,224 and KSh 133,347, while Chief Principals in Grade D5 earn up to KSh 167,415 in basic monthly salary.
Allowances Boost Earnings
Beyond basic salary, teachers receive several allowances depending on their job group and work station. These include house allowance, commuter allowance, hardship allowance for those serving in designated hardship areas, and other benefits that significantly increase total monthly earnings. In some cases, a teacher’s gross pay can be much higher than their basic salary due to these allowances.
What the New Salaries Mean
Education stakeholders have welcomed the salary adjustments, arguing that better pay improves teacher motivation and retention. However, some teachers continue to call for further salary reviews, citing inflation and increased living expenses.
As the 2025–2029 CBA continues to be implemented, teachers are expected to benefit from additional salary improvements and enhanced welfare measures over the coming years.
For many educators, the 2026 salary structure represents a significant step toward recognizing the vital role teachers play in shaping Kenya’s future generation.
