Two men have been arrested after detectives intercepted a consignment of cannabis sativa during an intelligence-led anti-narcotics operation along the busy Migori Road in Migori County.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects, Luke Okello, 35, and Steve Odero, 28, were arrested while allegedly transporting the narcotics on a Boxer Bajaj motorcycle, registration number KMEZ 125V, in the Namba area of Suna West Sub-County.

The operation, conducted by detectives from Migori Police Station, followed reports of suspected drug trafficking in the area. A search of the suspects led to the recovery of 114 rolls of cannabis sativa (bhang), which police said had been concealed beneath oversized jackets in an attempt to evade detection.

“The officers intercepted the duo, who were boldly ferrying a stash of cannabis sativa on a Boxer Bajaj motorcycle, registration number KMEZ 125V, along the busy Migori Road,” the DCI said in a statement.

The agency added that the two suspects were arrested at the scene and escorted to Migori Police Station.

“The duo was promptly arrested on the spot and taken to Migori Police Station, where they are now undergoing processing, ahead of their day in court. Meanwhile, the impounded motorcycle and the recovered narcotics have been seized as exhibits,” the DCI said.

Detectives have launched investigations to establish the source of the drugs, their intended destination and whether the suspects are linked to a wider narcotics trafficking network operating within Migori County and neighbouring regions.

The DCI reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying the fight against the trafficking and abuse of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances across the country.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains steadfast in the fight against trafficking and abuse of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. We will continue conducting intelligence-led operations to ensure those involved face the full force of the law,” the agency stated.

Police also appealed to members of the public to continue sharing information that could assist in dismantling criminal networks involved in the illegal drug trade, noting that public cooperation has been instrumental in the success of recent anti-narcotics operations.

The latest arrests underscore the government’s sustained efforts to curb the distribution and sale of illicit drugs, particularly in border counties such as Migori, which authorities have identified as key transit routes for narcotics.

Okello and Odero remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete. The recovered cannabis and the motorcycle will be produced as exhibits during the court proceedings.
